    Open Trailering a 62

Has anyone towed a 62 vett on an open aluminum trailer? My open trailer has 4 "D"-ring tie-downs with a 20' deck. After centering the weight where exactly on the frame of the car would you attach the straps? Criss-cross both ends? I will be going to Austin in a few weeks and Illinois for Roamer Cruise night on Labor Day weekend. Any close-up pics of attaching the straps to the frame/suspension. Need an expert to chime in and write an article for the Driveline or Restorer. Also hope to meet some of you guys & gals at BG.

      John

I have trailered a 57 on an open 16 ft. trailer with 4 D rings and I criss crossed the tie downs in the back to the rear axle and to the a arms in the front.

I was told not to criss cross the tie downs so I tried it in an open trailer and when I arrived the car had shifted over several inches. Si I criss cross them.

Have not tried the newer tire type tire tie downs but they look like they would work and not damage anything. Maybe someone else will chime in..or you can check the archives on trailering and you will find extensive conversation. Make sure you have fresh trailer tires on the trailer! Not car tires.

Did you hook into the A-arms or wrap the strap all the way around and back to the ratchet? On the rear how did you attach to or around the rear axle? Did you criss-cross over the differential? I would like to see some pics if you have them?

I use axel straps around the axel on each side and cross them that then attach to the end hook of the strap with the ratchet at the trailer D hook.

In the front I use axel straps fed through the a arm and criss crossed toward the trailor D rings. I also loosely attach the wench line and hook just for extra measure.

Have never had a problem. Take your time and test fit a few different ways so you don't have anything rubbing on fiberglass. The car will move some in transit especially going over bumps and through curves in the road and you don't want to damage anything...but most of all you don't want to lose the car...or have it ship in a major way while pulling.
