    Correct length for tach cable?

What is the correct length for a '66 327/300 tach cable? Is it 24" or 27"?

    Thanks
    Rob

I think my original is just a little over 24"

P&A30 parts catalog shows #3866126 Shaft Assy (shaft 23"; cable 24_1/8"), for '63-7. But also shows for '63 1st design shaft assy. 25_1/8", w/o casing, and another # for '63-6 2nd design shaft assy. (w/o casing) No dimension given.

Thank you both for your replies. My original broke (stopped working) on the road tour to Tahoe. I haven't pulled the old one to measure yet. I have a replacement that came from LIC and is roughly 24" long, however I noticed that Paragon's catalog calls for a 27" cable for the '66 . . . so I was just wondering which is correct.

Rob - I tried the 27" cable from Paragon on my '66 327/300 and it was far too long. I was able to get it in and working but it looked very sloppy. I ended up using Corvette Pacifica's part number E7789 for late 64-67 Corvettes. The swedged ends are slightly different from the original, but the cable length is correct. Tim

Wayne, I had a similar problem - ordered a Paragon 27 inch cable and it's too long.

Spoke to Paragon and they claim they make it to GM spec for p/n 3866126.

I ended up ordering a cable from LI Corvette, but Paragon claims they sell 80 per year with no returns. Not sure if people are bending these to fit behind the distributor or what....or maybe this is really another cable for a different model year.

The dimensions you gave, what is "P&A 30" parts catalog referring too??? Something GM issued ?

            Thanks in advance.

Wayne, I just measured the inside cable on my 63. It is 25 1/8.

                Harry,

I just got off the phone with Paragon and they pulled their blueprints, the numbers above are correct (shaft = 23, cable 24 1/8th inch).

But, apparently people get the longer cables to work, so their cables will remain 27 inches long.

I have to admit, they were nice enough to look and return my call - which is very comforting. Maybe they will make a
different cable someday, you never know.

                  Robert,

That's the GM Parts & Accessories catalog.

Re: Correct length for tach cable?

The cable length has been a constant problem noted by members for C2's
From the GM documentation presented the length runs from 22 1/8, 24 1/8, & 25 1/8 however it is known that still other part numbers exist at unknown lengths. The 27 never appears, not even for C1's. So the story continues

I took my original tach and speedo cables from my '66 AC Coupe to a local speedometer and hot rod shop. They made complete/identical replacements for both cables and outer jackets. Exact fits.

And for the $$$ you would think they would get the ends correct. I purchased a speedo and tach cable for my 63 and the tach cable is way to long..
