    Pointless Ignition

I am considering replacing my dual pts ( '62 340 HP)with an electronic ignition conversion kit such as Lectric Limited or tech tronics.

Can anyone share their thoughts or experience on the conversion and whether one product outshines the other?

    thanks.

    Re: Pointless Ignition

    Robert,
I put a Pertronix conversion in my 340 HP 62 about 15 years ago.
Not one problem in 20,000+ miles of driving.
Every year or so I remove the distributor cap and make sure the magnet ring is tight and thats it. Never found anything loose but I like to look.
It does have 2 wires coming out of the distributor but I don't care about that.
The new Pertronix system has a cam lobe sensor so it is even more simple then my old unit.
Do a search of the forum and you will find lots of info.

I installed a LL kit in my 62 a year ago. No problems.

I too am a strong believer in replacing the "pointless" ignition points, and have run Pertronix II now for 15 years in my 63. I'm not sure what the units look like for your dual point distributor, but I imagine they are similar. Being a long time convert is why I can post in another ongoing thread that my main reason for not using AC-44 plugs is my concern that they will rust into the heads before I get around to changing them again.

If a single wire is important to you, then I guess either of the two units you mentioned will do fine. The Hall Effect units are about as simple as they get.

            Hi Robert

I too have used the Pertronix on several cars. I just converted my 62 340HP dual points using the single wire. Without opening one of the doors of the cap, you can't tell and it runs great!

              Bob;

Pardon my ignorance and fading memory, but was your 62 dual point the tall cap w/windows (weights above points)? I know they made the tall cap dual point/window distributor, but I don't know on what years or applications. I'm only familiar with the early style having the short cap and weights below the points circa late 50's.

I also have Pertronix in both of my Corvettes and in my farm tractor. Never had a problem.

                    Stu

I think the dual point cap was used from 58-62 on the fuel cars and 340 HP cars. Until I bought this car, I had forgotten about the dual points. It had a single window cap on it but when opened up it was still running the dual points. I looked at it as twice the possibel headache and put in the Pertronics. I don't know if others had to but I needed to adjust the timing after making the change.
