    69 Corvette sealer

Underneath the stainless trim pieces around the T-top and underneath the stainless trim pieces on the A pillar, there appears to be an almond color sealer that is pretty hard. Does anyone know what product this might be?

    Jim,

Search the words "silver caulk" (don't need to use the quotation marks) and you'll find everything you want to know in a few recent threads.

        Hi Jim,
When you used the word 'almond' to describe the color of your sealer it made me think of this heavy bodied sealer on my 71, not the silver sealer discussed in the thread that Patrick recalled.
In the picture it's the material with the black 'hash' marks going through it, it's about 1/2' wide and 3/8' thick It was very dense, very dry and powdery after these many years. It looks silver in the pictures but was in fact quite almond in color.
I also found the same material in the interior, acting as a sealer between the fiberglass under body and pillars and the birdcage.
Is this the material you're asking about?
        Regards,
        Alan

          Oh, OK. That one.

I found it here (center of picture):

          and here:

          and here:

I think it's likely bond, or a similar "bondo-like" substance.
I replaced it with some nice Strip-Calk.

3M makes a "body caulk, seam sealer" that is used with a caulk gun. It is beigh and/or almond in color. I usually epoxy prime the bare metal under it, then apply to the seams. Most body paint stores carry it.

I am trying to remember how the cars came into Trim for assembly. The Bird Cage came to Trim with small amounts of sealer in certain areas where the pieces of metal lapped each other and that became hard going through the ovens. From what you have in the picture, it seem to me that this is the substance that you are inquireing about. It does not look like the pumpable sealer that we loaded the header with in Trim for water leak control. That stuff would now be a dry clay like residue I would think. The color of the pumpable sealer was a off white color that went under the "T" molding and WS headers and "A" posts.

My 70 didn't have the hash marks; just solid beige colored sealing compound. It was still remarkably pliable after all those decades; I still have it around somewhere in a plastic sandwich bag. The black stripes may be a visual indicator to the operator that his supply of "pumpable sealant" may be approaching the bottom of the container. I see your trim had the foam "dam" behind the compound as mine did.

                  Hi Anthony,
I really want to thank you for your explanation. What I found on my car WAS like dry clay.
In thinking about my post last night, I realized I could have said that the material reminded me of the material we called glazing compound that was found in old wooden residential windows. One of the first jobs I had was Saturdays at a hardware store where people would bring their sash in for new glass and I would get it ready for the glazier by digging out the old compound which had hardened. I remember that if you sniffed the can of compound you could get a little high, but of course I never did that.

                  Hi Chuck,
I saved MY compound in a baggie too. It'll be VERY valuable someday... right?
                  Regards,
                  Alan

HaHa...Only in sentimental terms. It's true physical value probably peaked about ten years after it was installed.
