I am trying to help a friend find replacement heads for his original engine 1965 396. In searching GMPP, I am unsure of the application needed. He would like fully assembled cast iron heads. Does anyone have a part number and or experience with the GMPP heads? He intends to utilize his stock engine components, alternator, carb, manifolds etc. All suggestions and help greatly appreciated. Thank you.

GM no longer offers any cast iron cylinder head for a Mark IV big block application. The last such head available was the GM #6260482 (casting #6272990 or 14096188) and it was discontinued several years ago.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: 1965 396 Replacement Cylinder Head help
Like many other 396 specific components, the cylinder heads are rather rare. You need to know how to visually identify 'correct' and then be patient in your search.
Plus, unless you get REALLY lucky, expect to pay a goodly sum for these parts. You WILL find cores available from the catalog houses that deal in used original parts (e.g. Paragon's 'Vintage' division), but don't expect the price to be cheap...- Top

One thing to keep in mind: if he wants to go "100% correct", it's going to be expensive as others have noted.
If he will accept "99% correct" there are a lot more options and much lower cost. Just about any set of rectangular port, closed chamber heads will work perfectly. The external differences between most of these heads and the originals range from extremely minor to very minor.
Open chamber, rectangular port heads can also be used but will result in a drop in compression ratio if the stock pistons are also used. However, the drop in compression might be beneficial. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
