Are there rubber strips between the gas tank and the support straps? If there are, perhaps the lack of same is the cause of my mysterious rattling from the rear of my '65 Coupe. -Clark

Re: Rubber Gas Tank Strips
No anti-rattle/squeak strips under the hold down straps on the regular gas tank. In the front, it sits on the X-brace that also holds the forward bolts for the upper tub of the spare tire carrier. In the rear, the tank sits on the rear frame. There are strips of what looks like heavy tar paper (not rubber) in these areas, for the full width of the tank.
Now if your coupe is a 36.5 gallon car, then yes, there are strips of the same material under the hold-down straps.- Top

Re: Rubber Gas Tank Strips
a black thick tar-impregnated paper, thicker than roofing underlayment but thinner than common roofing tar paper was used not only for the c-2 gas tanks but also the c-1's. think, but not real knowledgable about the c-3's , but think they too used this paper. bad thing about it though, it seems to retain water and most c-2 leaking tanks i've dealt with have the pin holes near or under the paper. mike- Top

Re: Rubber Gas Tank Strips
Yes, its like "a black thick tar-impregnated paper" similar to roofing felt or roof shingles. Now the thickness is about 0.095" at a width of 0.150" Strips of roof felt are used on decks which are only .04 thick and about 2" wide so you will need to fuse multiple pieces together and trim width to get back to the GM part or try the shingles (not sure of thickness but thicker)
The strips were used on both cross supports on my car (Mar64), but none under the support straps, however these were so tight that the tank was still shinny (no rust at all) under them.- Top

Re: Rubber Gas Tank Strips
I recently replaced the original tank on my '70, and what John said is right on. I found some 15# tar paper that I had laying around, but it was too thin. I stopped by a construction site and was able to get some 30# paper donated by a local roofer, and it was almost identical to what was on the tank originally.- Top
