    Engine code on 1960 - VI2I5XXB

VI2I5XXB is the engine code on the stamp pad of a 60 that I'm looking at. There is no serial number derivative on the stamp pad. The engine has two four barrel carbs.

Anyone know anything about that code?
    Thanks. Frank

First of all since it's a V for the Flint engine plant instead of an F, that would indicate a 67 or later casting assembled on the 15th of December. You need the casting date to tell which year. I don't have any 3 letter "X" suffix codes in my references, but the XX or XB should be a 69 350 with manual trans in a truck.

What is the block casting number, that will give a fair idea of what size engine it is.

Bill, the block casting number is 3892657. This engine has a draft tube which should indicate earlier rather than later.
        Thanks. Frank

67 302/327 block, nice piece if the date is good for a 67 Z-28.

road draft tubes(ie, block drilled for crankcase vent tube or later venting systems) was used in the small journal crank sbcs from 56 thru 67(and maybe 68 but c-3's not my forte).once the large journal cranks came along, the block wasn't drilled for the venting mechanism.mike

So what do you think, a nice replacement engine for this 1960 4 speed?
              Thanks for your help.

Nice replacement, but depending on the date, might be worth enough to a Z-28 guy to pay for a matching numbers 283.

I'm looking everywhere for the XXB suffix and can't find it. I may have not mentioned that the engine didn't have a serial number derivative on the stamp pad. Is this possibly an engine purchaced from a dealer?

couple of things, look for the S/N on the drivers side vertical flange of the block, where the engine meets the bellhousing right above the oil filter, not unusual for a pass car to be stamped there, right over the grain of the casting. Otherwise might be a over the counter piece. The date may be a clue. Is the engine ID code really XXB? if not what are the two characters before the "B"

I have seen this engine code before, and I have racked my feeble brain trying to recall where. It stuck in my mind because of the two Xs (I was thinking triple X, so you know where my mind was).

I have looked through most of my engine references, but haven't found it yet.

It seems like "service replacement engine" comes to mind, but that is just a vague memory.

                      I'll keep looking.

Maybe you're thinking of XXG which I've seen on a lot of 65 409 crate engines.
