C3 Clock Removal - Nuts Loose - Still Binding

    Coupe 350/200 with AC

I have been referencing the 3 threads below to get my clock out since it's been starting & stopping for years - (I love the archive/search as one gets instant answers!).

    https://www.forums.ncrs.org/showthre...clock&uid=37671972

Please reference the attached pictures to see my status.

I have the bezel loose, and the nuts on the bottom were already off and missing (or so I am thinking as you can see the play I have in it).

Problem is that the bezel is binding, and I'm afraid to put much force on it. Is the correct procedure to lift up & out? If yes, then it doesn't want to go - keeps hitting the vent at the top. Is the bezel removal more difficult because it's an AC car?

Question is does the bezel look all the way loose, and if so, what do I do to get it out (is up & out the right direction)?

    Fred,

I think you'll find it easier if you remove the passenger's side dash pad so you can actually see what is going on. Breaking an original bezel will bring you nothing but heartache.
I've done it in that manner without a problem, but never without removing a pad. I'm not saying it can't be done but I did not want to chance it.

The alternative is removing the e-brake console and shifter console, but it's more work.

      Patrick,

Your a wealth of knowledge. With the pad off, the bezel came right out.

I successfully got the clock out w/o breaking the bezel, but the points are toast! The top point has no pad left on it. I literally mean none - down to the metal bar only. It's amazing that it would even work for a few seconds-minutes as it did of late.

I have no skill for repairing small things - I know when I'm out of my league. I must have the clock refurbished. I hope to have a fast turnaround as the Michigan chapter meet is less than 3 weeks away.

Any suggestions on who to use? I see from the last thread above that The Clock Works is a possibility. Any others?

Buy a new one from the people who make them, stick it in, be done with it.
          Been there, done that.

Or, I'm sure they will rehab yours but for the $...

When I took my clock out to replace the movement with a quartz movement I had little trouble until I had to put the knob on. Apparently the origional knob broke off and the new one would not thread on! After massaging the new knob all went well but it was a pain! If you go this route make sure you get a new shaft for the knob. I'm sure you could get it from the movement supplier. Have Fun!

              Fred:
The last clock I had done for my '69 was by Corvette Instrument Service, 9627 Begonia St., Palm Beach, FL 33410. (561) 627-9345. This was in Feb of '07. The cost was $85 including shipping for a new mechanical movement. Turnaround time was quick (can't say how quick though). The problem with just buying a new clock is that the finish may be different from you other guages which may not be restored or as clean. Sending your clock and having a new movement put in will mean it will match you existing guages. I also had another clock done by Clock Works in Eagle River WI who also did a great job but that was in '02. His price back then was $68 for everything. Good luck! See you at the Chapter meet in June.
