Does anyone happen to know who is judging 63-64 chassis/suspension at the Bloomington Gold event next month? Just wondered how all the cars with black coating on almost everything will judge.

Doesn't sound like black coated front/rear suspension/drive for 63-64 is real popular.
Is this a heavy point deduction?- Top

Re: 63 Chassis Judging At Bloomington
At Bloomington every line item that the judge feels the finish is not correct will cost you at least 5 points and could be more. The magic number to still get the gold was 495 the last time I had a car judged.
I would say roughly 30 items at -5 is not a killer but a big hit.Lyle

Re: 63 Chassis Judging At Bloomington
As I remember back in the 80's the judges on 63's did not pretend to judge the black goo. Originality is king at Bloomington. You can have the wrong finish on an original part.
A part cannot grow chromed but the original back goo can be washed off the original part.

Re: 63 Chassis Judging At Bloomington
I started trying to "splain" to the Corvette world about "final blackout" and how most suspension/brake assy's were coated at least 35 years ago and it's just now beginning to catch on a little bit. It's been a long tough road.
I agree, it may not look professional or be pretty but that's restoration. Look it up in Websters for those that disagree.
No one on this board can show me proof that any 63 or 64 ever left the St Louis assy plant with shinny unpainted half shafts and a natural unpainted differential housing. Or natural front spindles. Or natural rear spindle supports.
Burroughs said it best. "The way it was, not the way we wished it were".- Top

Wayne, the JG does mention the strut rod shields for 63 and 64 to about VIN #5500.- Top

Re: 63 Chassis Judging At Bloomington
My pic shows the strut rod bracket that came with the complete '64 rear suspension I bought from a guy who bought it in 1968, in California, to put on his '40's rod, but never got around to it. The numbers were all consistent with a late January '64 vehicle (say 9,000 VIN). Diff cast J-18-3; assembled CF_1_3_64; spindle supports A_6_4 and L_7_3. This is the same low mile suspension from which I've previously posted pics of the black (asphaltic ?) paint on the half shafts and the trailing arms.Last edited by Wayne M.; May 18, 2009, 11:01 AM.- Top
