Have a 1963 coupe and noticed the driver's side window has some light vertical scratches in the glass presumably from raising and lowering the window. Am wondering what is causing the scratching and what the fix would be so the scratching doesn't get worse over time? BTW, the passenger side window hasn't been used much so, there aren't any scratches in it. Thanks.

Re: 1963 side window scratches
If the scratches are fine they are probably caused by dust and dirt on the window gasketing rubbing the galss as the window is openied and closed. It is possible to get out really fine scratches I think Eastmen sells a kit for this problem. Anything that you can catch with your fingernail will not come out.- Top

Re: 1963 side window scratches
I removed the scratches from the side glass of my 1970. I have posted extensively about it in the past. It is NOT true that scratches that fail the fingernail test can not be removed. One has to decide how much time one is willing to devote to the project, however. The deeper the scratch the greater the chance of noticeable distortion -- or put another way, the deeper the scratch the more glass will have to be removed to minimize the distortion. That all takes time, and lots of it.Terry- Top

Re: 1963 side window scratches
Thanks all for the input on this topic. Not sure which product I'm going to use yet to try and minimize the scratches but, will do some more homework on the ones readily available.
On a related topic, has anyone ever heard of putting something (maybe felt) on the inside of the rubber strip that makes contact with the glass when the window is raised and lowered? The rubber strip on this 46 year old car isn't exactly soft anymore so, am thinking short of replacing the rubber strip, maybe there is a way to put a felt liner or something on it so the rubber doesn't actually make contact with the glass anymore.
I may be over-thinking this a bit!!!

Re: 1963 side window scratches
One of the parts vendors sells a replacement rubber. They don't repo the stainless part but you can get the rubber. A friend of mine use to clean the rubber part with a q tip regularly to prevent the scratches. My 46 year old side windows have to many scratches to worry.- Top
