    C1 - Pinion seal leak

    I had a small leak.. a drop or two from the differential at the pinion seal.. I had the seal replaced, with a new seal.. Now the leak is a drip... and is much worse...

    Looking for some advise... Is a speedy seal the way to go now.. or is there something else i should be doing?

    Some information on the rear end in my 60...

    The 3725899 center section was stamped BO618 which, I was told it's a Buffalo passenger car housing cast on June 3, 1964, and assembled on June 18, 1964. These casting were used on '57-'62 Corvettes and '55-64 passenger cars for non-Posi applications;

    Thanks..

    Joe

        While we automatically assume the leak is the seal it might not always be the problem. The universal yoke that is held in by the pinion nut is splined. When replacing the seal the nut and yoke have to be removed. When the yoke is reinstalled one must put some sealant on the splines. I like Loctite 592, but liquid teflon works well too. USE IT SPARINGLY

            Thanks.. I will, but when I pull it apart will I be able to reuse the seal or should it be replaced also?

              I would just reuse he seal that was installed before. The difficult part is the re-assembly. You should clean the nut an yoke well, mark the nut in two places with a sharpie. Remove nut and yoke, clean yoke and then clean the pinion, wiping it with a rag soak with carb or brake cleaner would be best, don't spray it you don't want the solvent in the rear end.
              Apply seal to inside edge of yoke (the end with the shield) and slide it on the pinion. Screw the nut down until the marks on the nut line up that you made before. Inside the the differential housing there is a crush sleeve between the two tapered pinion bearing that establish a preload on the bearings. If you over tighten the nut you will change the preload on the bearings causing them to fail. That why it is so important to put the nut back where you found it. (Providing the guy who replaced the seal the first time followed the same proceedure. In any event do not follow the instuctions in ST-12)

                Everyone forgot the most important part - use some grease to lube the seal before you install it. If you install it dry, it will start leaking again in a very short time.
