    L-79 and '67-up camshaft sources ???

With the demise of Crane I no longer have a source for the "Special 300 HP" camshaft I designed.

Since this camshaft uses the L-79 (3863151) lobe on the inlet side and exhaust lobe from the '67-up base engine camshaft (3896929) on the exhaust side, any vendor that offers exact to GM print replacements has the proper lobe masters and should be able to grind the Special 300 HP cam.

I know Federal Mogul offers these cams, but I doubt they do custom work.

Does anyone know of any other sources for exact replacements of these two cams?

    Duke,

Yes, I know of a cam company that grinds custom camshafts.

Give me a call or e-mail.

Duke, I believe EGGE may do it. The offer thousands of repro engine parts including cams and special cut pistons, etc.

        Good Luck!

Duke, check eBay occasionally. I just picked up a New In Box Crane 929 with the lifters for $60.00.

              Re: L-79 and '67-up camshaft sources ???

Egge does not grind cams. They referred me to Isky. I will check, but I don't think Isky has any OE lobe masters.

Elgin and Crower do not show any exact OE replacement cams in their online catalogs.

Of all places, Comp Cams offers what appears to be exact 3896929 and 3863151 cams as part of their "muscle car cam" product line. (I never thought of the ...929 as a "muscle car" cam, but whatever...)

If they do, indeed, offer exact reproductions of these two cams then they have the lobe masters that are required to grind my "Special 300 HP" cam, which consists of the ...151 lobe on the inlet side and ...929 exhaust lobe on the exhaust side. I am not looking for "off the shelf" ...151 or ...929 replica camshafts. These are readily available at your nearest NAPA store.

There are lots of Web reports of wiped lobes on Comp Cam products, but most appear to be with their "Extreme Energy" product line, which has very aggressive lobe dynamics and need high force/rate springs.

Again, the specific request is: If you know of a company that offers exact reproductions of the above two OE camshafts please let me know. It needs to be an outfit that has the exact to Chevrolet blueprint lobe masters for the ...929 and ...151 cams and will do a custom grind with the two above lobes from the different OE camshafts with lobe indexing to my specification.

                Duke,
I have no info at all on these guys but for what it's worth:

They also list the 097cam in their store.

Cecil, Duke - Yes, this guy is a master Cam grinder (Thunderchicken) I believe is his ebay's name. I had two camshafts made from him. One was a 097 the other was the 30/30 about three years ago. He uses indexing from NOS camshafts. (can't go wrong there) Also local club member had a L-88 grind done a few years back, and he loves it.

                  He is highly recommended!

He's up near Seattle. ...anyone have a phone number?

Click on "camshafts" in the menu on the LH side of the ebay page to get the catalog. I didn't see the ...151 or ...929, but his prices sure are reasonable. It's worth a phone call.

I don't have a phone number, and misplaced my receipts. I do know he was very reasonable. But I did find his shops name and location, Rocket Machine Co. Tacoma, WA.
You can always send (Thunderchicken) a message through ebay requesting your information.

I can find no phone listing for Rocket Machine Co. in Tacoma. Are you saying this is the machine shop that grinds cams for Thunder Chicken? Is there a phone number on your receipt?

I also can't find a listing for Thunderchicken in Woodinville other than the previous number I listed, which appears to be blocked. It won't let me though.

I did sent a message to thunderchicken through ebay - at least I think I did. What a PIA. I hate ebay! People hide behind the Web. You have no idea who they are or how to actually talk to them.

Duke - I will do some more digging. I agree, don't like going through ebay either, I always suggest to attach your emaill address to the base of your message and ask to reply through you directly. But in most cases I use ebays web site. As long as you are asking for information and not to purchase an auction listing outside of ebay, then there will be no concern on their part.
