    I Don't know Jack

    I hope somebody does.

I have two jacks with handles. Both are wide base, but one handle has the trim ring removal prong on the side of the C channel and the other one has it on the center/top. The hole in the center of the bar is also different, one through both sides and one through the top.

Which one is correct for my 1969? Both jacks are dated in the early 70's.

    Michael;

You may want to re-title more specific to your subject. I opened out of curiosity as usually when some one says they don't know JACK, it is about a person or is followed by a 4 letter word starting with "S".

At least I can get you back in the "Q" for another look.

I looked at my pictures of my 9M (December 1969) jack handle. The tab for trim ring removal is on the center of the C-shape. There are three holes near the middle of the handle one from the center of the C-shape down into the channel, and one from each side, in line with each other.

I know a picture or two would work better, and I meant to post them last night -- but it just got too late. I'll post them tonight.

BTW: This will work if yours is a very late 1969, but if it is an early car, all bets are off.

One thing to keep in mind -- if the jacks you have are dated early 1970s then they are not correct for your car regardless their configuration. Do they have the A (for Ausco) on the top pad?

Maybe these pictures are enough to get some 1969 owners out to help you. These are from my January 1970, and the jactk is dated M9 -- December 1969. Too late for all but a few 1969s.

These are the items that I have. The jack is dated May 1973. Since the wrenches are not dated and they are configured differently there must have been a change at some time.

At this point I'm going to assume the one with the prong on the middle is correct for my early 69 unless someone says otherwise. I would like to know what era the other wrench is from though.

The one with the prong in the middle looks just like the one that came with my early 1970, and that I posted pictures of above.

It is interesting to note the font difference in the dates on your jack and mine. I'll post a photo of my date when I get home.

It seems I have already posted the picture of the date, so here is the link to it.

              Mike-----

The upper wrench in your photos as well as the wrench pictured by Terry is a GM #3898172. This is the wrench that was used for all 1967-82 Corvettes. I have never seen this wrench configured like the other one shown in your photo. Every 3898172 that I have seen, including much later SERVICE pieces, were configured just like Terry's which is also identical to the one originally supplied with my September, 1969 car.

1964-66 Corvettes used wrench GM #3858953. While there were some minor differences in this wrench compared to the 3898172, I believe the blade on the end of the handle was configured the same as the 3898172.

1963 Corvettes used wrench GM #3780737. I am not familiar with the configuration of this wrench. I suppose it's possible this is what you have. It's also possible that this was never a Corvette wrench, at all.

Do you think he might have been going for a play on words? At least, that is what I figured when I saw the title.
