I think the wire to the lighter is a #10 red, but check and see -- or look up the size on the wiring diagram. #10 wire in the air will carry 30a continuously. Since part of the wire is wrapped in the harness, it will heat up more than the part in the open air.
20a should be a suitable compromise. I doubt you will find a load that great that plugs into the lighter socket anyway. You ought to be able to hide the fuse is such a way that it is minimally visible.

Why screw around manually rigging a fuse when Casco solved the problem for us way back in the 50's?

Check around at the auto parts stores in your neck of the woods or on eBay. You're looking for a Casco L2C cig fuse. It simply screws onto the power stud of the lighter's power socket.

These were used by various safety oriented vehicle mfgrs (Buick, Cadillac, Etc.) and applied, generally, to the rear seat lighter sockets where small children might 'experiment' by dropping foreign objects into the power receptical to see what happens...
