1975 Carb Questions / Advice Needed

Corvette Central lists different Q-Jet replacement numbers for the '75 ( one for L48, another for L82 )...Can someone help me out on what the difference is, and more importantly, would there be any advantage to using the L82 version on my L48?

    Happy Mothers Day to All!

    Thanks

Among other possible differences, the throttle bodies, choke vacuum control, primary jets and primary metering rods were different between the L-48 and L-82 carbs. Just exactly what the differences were I could not tell you. However, the throttle body difference would be the one I'd be most concerned about if I was considering using an L-82 carb on an L-48.

Would an L-82 carb be beneficial if used on an L-48? I HIGHLY doubt it. In fact, I'd say doing so might create problems with no off-setting benefit, at all. GM did not use different carburetors for the applications because a single unit would have worked just as well for all.

Also, there were originally FOUR different carbs used for 1975. Two were used for L-48 (with manual or automatic transmission) and two were used for L-82 (with manual or automatic transmission). The differences I described above apply to the L-48 versus L-82 carburetors of EITHER the automatic or manual versions. There were other differences between automatic and manual carbs but I can't tell you right now what they were.

      Thanks Joe,

I just wasn't sure which way to go....sometimes I play "what if" in my head a little too much.

I appreciate the response, and as always, the expertise.

        Tommy,

Also realize that you're probably getting "generic" Quadrajet that is "suppsoed to work" for your application. The odds of you getting a correct-for-75 numbers-matching carb are somewhere between slim and none.

CC orders a carb from a major generic rebuilder, and sends it to you. They don't offer "correct" carbs. For that you will have to look elsewhere.

FYI, you can order the same carb that CC sells by visiting AutoZone, Napa, or your local auto parts store.

          Thanks Patrick,

I wasn't thinking abput date correct (although that would be nice)...the original carb is long gone....just looking for a "functionally correct" unit.

Could you tell me where on my existing carb that the date codes are? Now that you mention it, I should not assume that the carb on the car is not original. Maybe.....

              Parick,

Thanks for the picture...I'll have the car back from the front end shop on Wednesday ( aligning all of the new parts & suspension that I 've been busting knuckles on for a while )

              I appreciate the information.

Should not be too hard to find a correctly numbered and dated 75 carb. I think I understand that your car is an L-48. Is it an auto or manual trans car?

Check Ebay and the various carb rebuilders. May be easier than you think.

I got a correctly numbered and dated carb for my old 72 off of Ebay at a very reasonable price.

Looks like there are 4 different 7045222 (L-48, automatic, I think) carbs on Ebay right now.
