Help needed on 68 engine pad

    Hey all,

I have been an NCRS member for a couple years but this is my first post to the board, so if I screw it up, be forgiving. I am in the process of evaluating a '68 L-89 for purchase. I would appreciate any opinions as to the authenticity of this engine pad:

OK Jack, I'll give you an opinion. If you examine the machining marks on the first picture, look at the lines in the machined surface. Notice that some of them move in a pattern that causes adjacent lines to move in relation to each other. One of the first items to look at is "Parallel" lines, not "converging or diverging" lines. Now, what do YOU think?

Broach lines look bogus, as in fake. As Bill said all machine lines/grooves should be parallel the full length of the deck.

If I were looking at this car I would walk away. Was this car advertised as original engine?

it is advertised as 'numbers matching' not as 'original engine'. It is supposedly a two owner 49k original mile car. It would be interesting to try to contact the two prior owners.

        thanks for your opinions btw.

Ask the seller who the former owner(s) were and see what he says. My guess is that he won't tell you or will have a story. That pad has definitely got funky looking broach marks.

there is also a tank sticker, but, surprise, the top part with the VIN is gone. I am definitely calling the seller on Monday and asking for the two prior owners. I can't wait to hear the answer!

There is no VIN on a 1968 tank sticker. The first tank sticker ith a VIN is 1971, about mid-year, and then it was NOT at the top.

thanks Terry. So this is probably an obvious question, but is there any way to positively attach a tank sheet to any individual car prior to 71? Other than matching options, which could be added later?

Tank sticker would have to be very good to keep me from walking on this car
