I can take my daughter in the 2005, but if we as family want to go to a show or cruise night we would need to take my 69 Camaro, has anyone here ever put a car seat into an old car? If so how do you safely install the seat? Its kind of a dumb a question but my wife feels left out when my daughter and I take the Corvette and leave her at home.

Re: Child seats in old cars?
Matt,
I put my son's car seat and booster seat in my C2 Corvettes all the time. Granted they only have the lap belt to hold the seat in place but the car seat has the built in over the shoulder straps. See attached picture.
Hope this helps.

Re: Child seats in old cars?
James,
That picture proves you have good ol' American values. How old / heavy is your son? Maybe the laws vary by state, but I thought that kids had to be something like 80 pounds or more to ride in the front seat here in Missouri. It's a moot point right now since my Corvette ain't zactly runnin'. My kids are 5 and 4, they both weigh around 40 pounds.

Re: Child seats in old cars?
We took a "family vacation" in 1987 (I think) in our '64 coupe w/AC - myself, wife, son (10 years), & daughter (7 years). The trip included the NCRS convention in Osage Beach, MO and then on to Kansas City. More than 1000 miles was logged with three riding in front (we had a middle back pad & seat belt) and one child in back with the soft side luggage. I was going to configure a back seat set up but the kids were getting too big so I never did. Many years ago I saw a mid year coupe at Bloomington with a back seat installed, I don't remember if it also had seat belts. My daughter came home from the hospital sitting on my wife's lap in a 65 coupe. Now days they would not let you leave or call the police. I plead Corvette insanity! Don H.- Top

Re: Child seats in old cars?
AND, to make it more complicated, I think the laws vary state by state.
There are height and weight requirements for kids, etc.
I can't take my grandkids anywhere without snap in safety seats with shoulder harnesses, etc.
When I was a kid, we rode in the back of pickup trucks. We had cars with no seat belts, etc. We used to pile 8-10 guys and girls into the back of a friends van in high school and go to the Drive In movies. Couldn't do that today.
My daughter is 38 now. When she was a kid, we used to take her everywhere in the 63 Corvette. She'd sit on the center cushion. Today, I'd be arrested for child abuse for doing the same thing.

Re: Child seats in old cars?
When my twin sons were babies we had a 63 2-door Bel Air Chevy family car and we used these very light weight lined plastic like carriers that had a wire bracket that clipped over the seat back. We would strap them in an upright position and clip the wire brackets over the seats in order to have the two of them ride between us in the front seat. Later on with the 63 Vette, I had the passenger seat adjusted full up and would safety belt them to it side by side so they could ride with me. They also spent a lot of time riding backwards in our Chevy wagons. Do you suppose that was good training for them to become Pilots - as they both are to this day (Air Force and Commercial)??

Re: Child seats in old cars?
When I was a kid and Dad traded in the covered wagon (lottsa room in it) for the "machine" we used to stand up in the back, noses over the front seat sniffing mohair and hold on to the strap mounted to the back of the front seat. Years later my wife and I would take our daughter in the '77. The favorite places, when she got tired of sitting on Mom's lap with the seat belt around both of them, were huddling on the floor between Mom's legs or crawling in the back and napping behind the seats. ---she was about four then.
'remember the "back seats" offered in '63 for coupes?- Top

Re: Child seats in old cars?
Yes, things have changed a lot. My daughter in law won't let my grandchildren (9 and 11) ride with me in our family Impala because it only has a driver's side air bag, and I had open heart surgery in 1993. She fears I will some day have "the big one" while they are with me. Once while we were baby sitting them a few years back, we took them out to eat and she flipped. We don't even get to baby sit them anymore because of it. Instead, she would rather trust a neighbor, any neighbor including a same sex couple.
I once took them out in the Vette when they were about 4 or 5 and she had a fit. She won't even look at the pictures we took of them in the car.
What a wimpy dumb down crazy society we've become!
