    Re: Ipod or MP3 Player?

    Thanks guys.

First, I didn't realize that an ipod is an mp3 player but after what was said here and some googling I see where they are the same but different.

My first choice was in fact for an ipod but then I was under the impression that you could only get the songs from itunes and when I searched for some on their site, I couldn't find them. I also need an FM transmitter because the radio in my 69 doesn't have an aux jack! Plus then I can use it in any car with an FM radio. But from what some of you are saying it sounds like you can somehow get songs from places other than itunes for an ipod.....is that correct? I don't really like the idea of buying hardware that uses proprietary software like the ipod but it sounds like it's the way to go.

I'm also thinking of getting a gps so maybe I should look at an itouch because I think they have a gps in them as well. OR, a gps like a tomtom 720 that has an mp3 player and FM transmitter in it....

    So confused.......

Another vote for I-Pod. I have a Redi-Radio adapter that allows me to plug it in to my wonderbar and it sounds great. Since AM has no music, I can now listen to tunes with my stock radio.

You're not the only one who is confused, Greg.

Seems like technology is passing me by. TOO much stuff to keep up on anymore.

As mentioned before, with my IPOD, I've bought "tunes" from their site, but most of the music on my IPOD is music I've "downloaded" or transferred from my personal CD's.

I also use the FM modulator, as I don't have plug-in jacks in any of my old car radios. I'm not an audiophile. I think it sounds just fine.

            Greg,

Yes, you can rip your own CDs (or a subset of the songs from a CD) to your computer using iTunes. You can choose if you want MP3 quality (AAC) or CD quality (ALC). There are other programs for this as well. I saw them mentioned in the latest issue of Stereophile. I don't remember the names of the programs. Once the songs are on your computer, when you plug the iPod into the computer, it updates the iPod.

If you want GPS too, you might consider the iPhone. It has a GPS like navigation function and can store something like 10 GB of music. It's a cell phone plus internet browser and more.
