    1964 Inside Door Lock Dilemma

    Hi all,

I am needing a bit of expertise to figure exactly how to tackle my dilemma. When the drivers door is closed with the door reflector lock placed in the lock position when I go to unlock the door using the inside handle 9 out of 10 tries the lock sticks. When I remove the reflector locking knob the door locking mechanism moves freely. I am using the correct spacer between the locking knob and door panel but it appears if the locking mechanism were about a 1/16th inch longer it would allow for a more freer movement of the locking knob. As a side note the passenger door locking knob works perfectly 10 out of 10 tries.

    Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Craig Willetts

Craig. Do you have original or repro door panels. Maybe the repros are a tad thicker causing the problem? Course you said you only have issues with one side. JD

I have had a similar problem with my 63 since day one - with the driver side door only. I have replaced the door mechanism twice - once because it was broke and again because it wouldn't work right. It presently is still very stubborn, but works good enough to get by. I recall many years ago I had it all apart trying to figure away to improve it, but nothing I tried did much for it. I will be interested if some of the older experienced "body/chassis" fellows will chime in.
