    C2 disc pads

When I restored my car last year I installed semi metalic disc pad and with out power brakes you really have to stand on the brakes to get the car to stop right. I was told I need to get the oem organic pads. I have an old box of wearever pads model D8 but I cant seem to find any one who carries these or any organic pads. I went to nappa they said the have them and when i went to look at them they were a grey material and looked and felt like semi metalic pads. The wearever pad that I have (only one set ) have a cad plated backing plate and a tan color pad that does not contain any metal. Can any one tell me were I may find the original type organtic pads< and do you think this will help in the stopping area. I checked most of the vendors and they all seem to only have the semi metalic pads. Please help me out . I went to advanced auto were I got the wearever D8s and they no longer carry that number and the pads that they do carry for the c2 they say are organic however they are also semi metalic.

Gerry, can't help on the pads, but must ask, are you sure there is no air in the system? Bill

Hi Jerry. I worked in a brake mfg. facility as a production manager in a previous life. Some years ago the Govt. told the industry to change so "organic" is now the name given to nearly all base product, including Kevlar. The asbestos pads were grey color and the perimeter usually fuzzy from face grinding Many "organic" materials are tan, but not all. Some even have a green tint and some black/dark grey. Semi-metallic should not make much difference in the pedal feel and semi's don't have to be as hot as metallics to operate. I would check the system first. You may want to check the pads for moisture as that will eliminate friction. If you drive the car infrequently and it is in a somewhat humid climate the pads will absorb moisture and require a little more effort. The D8 orifginally referred to the metal backing plate to which the puck or pad is either riveted or glued with adhesive. A D8 is commonly called the (early) GM brake pad/backing plate. The backing plates come with a number of finishes, black paint, or a variety of gold or silver finishes dependent upon the spec. of the manufacturer and marketer. A few years ago Midas carried the early GM pad in non-metallic but I don't know about now. I use semi-metallics on one car and non-metallics on another and really can't tell the difference with pedal pressure. There are a number of pads advertised in AutoWeek, the Corvette magazines and performance publications that have a variety to choose from.

          Hey Gerry,
I gave a lot of thought to the issue of semi metallic and "standard" pads last year as I was prepping my car for a long trip. I decided on standard pads based on input here on the TDB. I decided against the semi metalic pads due to concerns about how agressively it would wear the rotors. I bought the standard pads from Corvette America and I am very happy with the results. There's nothing fancy or special about them. I'm not sure what organic means but these work well. The brakes now perform flawlessly with these pads.

          Good luck.

          Cheers,

            Gerry,
Check out the string from last year that helped me with my decision. When Joe Lucia and Duke Williams are on agreement on something, it's pretty good advice.

I discussed this in detail within the last two months, so suggest you search, but I will summarize.

All new pads/shoes must be marked with letter codes indicating the "cold" and "hot" Cf ranges. Typical is "ff", and you should not buy anything below this. If you can find some "gf" pads, that would be great.

Check to see if the Axxis Deluxe Advanced is available in the D8 geometry. I just bought a set of these for my Mercedes. They are the follow-on to the Repro Deluxe that I installed circa 1990 to replace the OE pads which worked very well, but they dusted, squeaked, and were chewing up the rotors.

The Axxis web site shows four friction materials used for this line of pads. The front pads for the Merc are stamped "gf" and "ff" for the rears.

Paragon has the organic pads - $20.00 per axle set. My manual-brake '67 had semi-metallic pads on it when I bought it, and changing to the OEM-type organic pads made a noticeable difference in pedal effort (although we're all spoiled rotten by the power brakes on our daily drivers).

John - I agree that we arem spoiled with the power brakes but I find the transition back to the "non-power" brakes pretty easy. They really do stop well with the organic pads. Not bad for a 45+ year old design!

The Wagner niumber was PD 728A (small D-8 on the box). I took it off the spare set I took out of my store in the 1980's(on my shelf). I used to change them often before sleeved calipers and "brake Kleen". Dale
