    67 questions

Have had two 67 427 cars judged in the last year and both times I have been counted off for there not being any paint build up around the tonawonda valve cover sticker. Judges are saying that the sticker was on the raw steel valve cover before it was painted, saying it was taped off and then the covers were painted orange. Then there was a build up around the edges of the sticker. Correct me if I am wrong, but I find this hard to believe. It would have been unecessarytime to tape it off. And I would have thought the tape might have pulled off the sticker. Any thoughts on this? Has anyone pulled a sticker off of an original valve cover to find no paint? Thoughts?

The sticker was not "taped off" it had a self contained film on it with tab for removal and it was applied to the valve cover before paint.
They put the sticker on, then painted the valve cover and the pulled the tab that removed the film and left the sticker in place.
      Hope this makes sense.

Here is a picture of the sticker with the tab. It continued throughout Mark IV engine production.

I stand corrected. Is anybody making this sticker like this?

Then there would little or no paint where the tab was. I never saw an original w/o paint all around the sticker & am not convinced it was placed there before paint. Any plant guys out there to clear this up?

There were three parts to the sticker. The sticker itself, a backing sheet and the semi transparent top sheet. To remove the back protective sheet, the one that covers the adhesive portion, the tab was usually bent outward so the sheet could be separated from the sticker. The sticker was then placed on the vlave cover and the engine was painted.
The tab was bent enough, and stuck up enough, to allow it to be removed after the paint operation.
That's why few original paint covers show light or no paint where the tab would have been.

I have an original Tonawanda sticker and it looks exactly like the picture posted above.

                Jeremy,
Ron at Ron's Auto Restoration has these stickers with the tab and double sided backing sheets. His number is 978-345-6159. Good Luck.
