    Vacuum Advance 1954

Lots of info on VAC for V/8s but not much for 6 bangers. I just noticed that my distributor is not moving (vacuum advance not working). Does it operate similarly to the V/8's.
What usually has failed when the distributor is not moving under various throttle positions.

Six cylinder distributors basically work the same as single point V8 distributors as far as I know. The VAC should rotate the breaker plate in response to manifold vacuum. If not the breaker plate or VAC is probably seized.

I can't help you with parts numbers, but most of what you need is probably made by Standard Motor Products and available through NAPA. Just type in the year/model their online catalog and go from there.

Get out the service manual and give the whole thing a decent overhaul. Changes are it hasn't been apart since it left the Delco plant over half a century ago.

the 54 vette 235 vac adv can is similar to that used by the 6 cyl chevy pass cars 235's of 54. the 54 vette can has "076" stamped adjacent to the octane selector. i'm uncertain if the 54 pass car 235 used the "076" vac can. it'll fit, may just have a different advance curve and may not have the "076" stamped on it.. mike

There are a number of differences on the original. The original has many marks for octane selection below the 076 cast number (see bottom right pic). Later replacements do not. The original has a different fitting for where the vacuum advance line connects as a (nut) . And the original has the copper part. Near the distributor holder. Later dont.

Thanks, I will proceed and take mine apart and see what it needs.
