    61 turn signal collar

What keeps the turn signal collar from sliding up and down the steering column. There is a key that keeps it from rotating, sort of, but what keeps it for sliding?

    thanks

The screw in the back is into a tapered collar. Theoretically, that will do it. In reality, no. It's a bad design that they used for at least 10 years on all sorts of passenger cars and Corvettes. There's an article, I think in the Restorer if memory serves me correctly, about dipping that tapered block in the liquid rubber ind of stuff that you dip tools, etc. into to make handles. That will help. Don't tighten the screw too much, because if you do, you begin to oval the collar/cup and then it wants to slide all that much more.

The locking key or 'wedge' combined with the truness of the keyway in the pot metal TS housing does both jobs.

Typically, used original parts from the era have seen a reasonable degree of wear and either need to be 'shimmed' or replaced to eliminate 'slop'. It's the crisp/firm fit of the TS housing onto the steering column that makes the system work like it's supposed to.

The TS switch has no detent position(s) for right/left/center and the system relies entirely on the TS housing being attached RIGIDLY to the steering column for things to work as they were designed to...
