    Door latch hardware

Should the three screw heads that hold the latch to the door be body color or chrome? Also, what is the correct finish for the striker in the "B" pillar that the latch closes on?

The car was repainted two different colors over the years and hardly anything was masked off. The entire door jambs were painted, including the weather stripping. I guess I should be luck they taped off the interior.

The screws that hold the latch to the door are zinc.

The striker on the B-pillar is zinc as are the large spacer washers at the base of the striker, but I have seen many with over spray evidence on them. I suspect that over-spray is from "touch-ups" Factory or otherwise.

I had always understood that some sort of "tube" (think toilet paper inner cardboard roll) went over top of the striker when the car was going down the paint line. Thus, a bit of body color is not unusual.

I will be pleased to hear your explaination of how the blue paint on my car got under those huge washers. That tube must have failed on my car. Or more likely IMO (no humble here ) the striker and washers were not present when the body was painted.

I took it loose just to answer the question the OP asked. I have some overspary on the driver's side from the factory touch-up that included the entire driver's side quarter panel.

                I concur.

If those parts are illustrated in the main body of the AIM, i.e. after that first bolt/weld section on body assembly (I believe they would be shown in the door section), those parts would not have been on the car when it was painted.

Of course, paint UNDER the washers would be the confirmation.

I'm a nice guy but I'm not about to attempt that one. With my luck I'd booger up something or a screwdriver would slip and there'd go the paint.

I thought your car was always "inaccessible?"

I didn't say I took it loose tonight. That was years ago, in my foolish youth, but I don't think the paint went away in the mean time.

I took my strikers off years ago, and they're still off. The original paint was there...the "toilet paper roll" myth is busted. Alas, the paint was also stripped years ago, or I could take a picture to be proof positive. I might have a picture, but I'm pretty sure it's currently "inacessible".

After taking a look to confirm that I did indeed strip the door jambs, I discovered that even with the paint stripped from the jamb fiberglass, original paint overspray remains in the hole, and on the bolting plate where the striker mounts. See photo below:

OK, Ok. You proved it to me.
The toilet paper roll Urban Legend has just died.

And why don't you have that car done yet? You "racing" Lucia to see who takes longer or dies with their car undone?

Chuck, very neat and clean job stripping the paint without damage. How did you do it? Blast? Chemical?
