I'm looking for information to determine a correct shift knob for my 63. Aside from the 1.5in in diameter and the correct bakelite material with the circumferential parting line. What i'm wondering if it original knobs had metal inserts or sleeves for the threads. I can't seem to find that level of detail anywhere. I see some that do and some that don't. If so are they steel, brass, etc? Also was there only one shift know for 63, 3spd 4spd and auto? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Re: 63 Shift knob originality
Primo, On ebay you will see someone selling a NOS 3 speed 63 black knob. The ad has been on their forever.
The 63 4 speed knob has a steel insert. Service replacements, etc. typically have a brass insert. My 63 has a NOS 4-speed black knob and it has the parting line like you mentioned. Has a treaded steel insert. The insert appears to be zinc plated although I am not sure on the plating. But it is definitely magnetic.
The automatic knob has a very large hole in it.
I ruined my original 63 4speed knob years ago when I buffed the scratches off it and took the parting line off. Didn't know any better. John- Top

Re: 63 Shift knob originality
Thanks for the reply. So it's a definite that all of them emphatically had some sort of metallic sleeve. Sounds logical as i'm not sure how durable a bakelite know would be without an insert, especially in a manual transmission application. You mention that the auto knob has a large hole in it? Do you mean that the threads are larger than 5/16, as in the 4spd knob?- Top

Re: 63 Shift knob originality
Primo, The auto knob with the big hole didn't come out till 1965. Sorry about the error. Jorjorian wrote me one of his famous emails correcting me.
All the threads for 63 knobs are the same. 5/16.
All 63's no matter what tranny used the same knob. Info from Jorjorian. JDLast edited by John D.; April 28, 2009, 11:50 AM.- Top
