What Rear Axle is this?

Hi Guys,

I have been restoring my 61 Fuelie and finally got around to looking more closely at my Rear Axle. I looked up the numbers and I'm afraid I may have a passenger car Posi unit. The date is correct but the numbers don't line up with the NCRC Judging Book. The number on it is 3789812 with a K230 date. Any ideas? Also on the other side is the designation AL 1212.

You have the correct casting number and the casting date looks like November 23, 1960.....do you have an early '61....maybe December '61 - February '62 final assembly??

My references show AL code as a 4:11 posi, with a 3 speed overdrive, installed in a passenger car. 1212 would be a December 12th assembly date.

Jack - Yes, your numbers are correct and the date as previously stated depends on your production date. The code for 61 for 4.11 should be AP positraction manual transmission, or AT positraction manual trans & H.D. Brakes & Suspension, or FL positraction manual trans & Metallic Brakes.

My 61 fuelie has 3789812 FL and my build date is November 15, 1960.

What a relief! Yes my build date is Feb 12, 1961. Sounds like I am OK. I really appreciate the research on my behalf. I appreciate you guys so much. Bill you have helped my before with my 315 HP 61. I'm also about 65% complete. I can't wait. I don't plan to have it judged but I'm going NCRS anyway and having a blast doing all the Sherlock Holmes work on it.

I'm confused (which is my normal state). I believe that the code stamped on your gear assembly (AL) indicates a passenger car 4:11 posi, not a Corvette 4:11 posi.
