    Paint problem

Sometime ago there was a discussion regarding paint problems om top of the driver side fender near the master cylinder. It was suggested that the problem was caused by brake fluid spills over the years, and even though the car was stripped and repainted it would eventually bleed through the new paint. There was a suggested fix, but at my age I can't remember details. Can anyone help?
    Thanks

    Ernie,
I don't remember the specific discussion but you may want to try out the search function. I use it all of the time to find old discussions I remember or to research my latest stupid question that I know has been covered before

You'll see the "Search" option in the second Blue Bar across the top of this page. Type in a few words and see what pops up. It's easy and pretty darn good.

    Good luck with your search!

    Cheers,

      Ernest,

If the composite is contaminated with organics such as motor oil, compressor oil from a bad air conditioner compressor front seal, or brake fluid spills, it can SOMETIMES be flushed and dried, repeatedly with an aggressive solvent such as acetone or lacquer thinner. The composite must be SOAKED, as to emulsify and release the contaminant and repeatedly wiped dry. Judicious use of a heat lamp for drying is very useful.

Unfortunately, this does not always work. In many cases the outer layers of composite must be ground away, and new glass hand laid in. In some cases the entire area must be cut out and a new piece grafted in.

Some people claim that 20-30 mils of "gelcoat" will provide a fix, but the contaminants will still migrate to the surface and bubble the fresh paint. Not good news. Try a progression from least to most severe cure.

A friend of mine, Bill Nickell, prided himself on doing his own work. 15 years ago or so, he was doing a dark Turquoise '58 - a nice car.
Four or five times he ended up with a "fisheye" through the paint right next to the front emblem - he did all the redos, without success.
One Sunday AM he called and said "Got that SOB. Come take a look.".
I did and asked "What did you finally do?" and Bill respectfully showed me his new 3/8" holesaw from Ace Hardware.
        It never came back.

Ernie, Rich is on the right track but before you put paint over the primer I would definitely use a good sealer. And again very light coats of primer with plenty of dry time between coats.
