Hello I would like to know what type of finish is correct on my 72 seat back lock assembly bracket ( which contains the 2 screws ). I cleaned it and it needs a touch up. The bracket seems to appear as not flat black but does have a semi gloss look to it. If anyone has pictures of what color it should be and what type of paint etc that I could use. I did use the test form to see if I could put pic of my bracket and it did come out ok . I will try and put the pic in this request
Looking for help and replies thank you

Re: What type of finish on bracket ?
Hi Charles,
On my 71 the bracket is dark gray phosphate, (similar to the hood latches), and the 'loop' is plated bright cad or zinc.
I hope this helps you.

Re: What type of finish on bracket ?
I "think" we determined a few weeks ago in a different thread that 71 and "maybe" early 72 were black phosphate, but later 72 is semi-gloss or similar black paint.Vice-Chairman (West), Michigan Chapter NCRS

Re: What type of finish on bracket ?
Hello Patick 1ST>. Thank you for reply. I I have to believe you are correct. My June 28-72 built Vette. I cleaned the the bracket, I could tell it has had its time of wear etc. As I was cleaning the bracket ( the under neath of it showed A DRIP or BLOB of paint which was black with a semi/low/ gloss appearence) . As I cleaned and inspected the bracket and checked if it been worked on before, and it to did not show signs of been worked on. I do believe in my opinion that these brackets were sprayed ( possible dipped ) very poorly. due to the signs of how the paint was applied --streaks --lines and the dryed blob of paint which I found on the under side of the bracket. You mention that this topic was brought up awhile back if possible can you send info so that I read that disscussion? your reply is very greatly appreicated --thank you for helping me looking foward to chat more with you when possible. THANK YOU72 cpstingray- Top

Nothing to send; just check the Archives here.
I know that the 72 I'm working on "seems" to have black phosphate, and it's in the S/N 7500 range. My own early June 72 has painted ones, but I could swear my 71 had painted ones as well. Unfortunately my 71's lineage is not as clear as the two 72s, so no guarantee on that car.

Patrick:
Regarding the black phosphate: some weeks ago we both subscribed to a thread on this and I said I bought the Shooters Solution material and was going try it. You said to report back on the quality and I experimented with a large fender washer and the results are fantastic! The color is exactly right (dark charcoal grey but not black) and the "speckles" look to be right on. I am going to do a pair of hood latches this week so I will take some pictures and post them with some details of the process. Maybe I'll even write an article on it. Missed seeing you today at the chapter swap meet.

Re: What type of finish on bracket ?
Thanks for this one, Charles. Caused me to have a look at mine. First I thought it was plated, but upon closer exam, I see that it's painted - and a sloppy job at that.
Hmmm. Alan's '71 brackets are plated, however, I spoke with an orig owner '71 LT1 earlier today, who advises that his are painted. Patrick's late '72 is painted. Another '72 is plated. Might we have multiple vendors, using different finishes? Kinda strange that 2 vendors would be tooled up for this low volume part. Did this part get used in other GM 2-door applications? (Camaro, G body, etc)?
I can't quite see what the headmarks on your bolts are. Can you describe the markings, and are yours painted or plated? I clearly see that they are black, however, I see a silver/grey color where a wrench has been on them. Is this the plating worn thin or is it paint worn off?Don Lowe

Glad that you like it.
Next time I see you (June, either Chapter Meet or Bloomington) you'll have to fill me in on your phone call with the owner of Shooter's Solutions.
