I am attempting to replace the key buzzer switch on a 73 with a standard steering column which requires removing the lock plate in the column. The 1973 chevrolet service manual states to discard the wire snap ring after removing/exposing it with the Lock Plate Compression tool. Question can the snap ring be reused and if not where can they be purchased. I am guessing the ring will bend and lose its spring once I pry it out. Thanks

Re: Lock Plate retaining ring 72,73 etc
Chuck You Can Reuse The Ring If You Dont Mangle It To Bad, The Way I Remove Is Two Small Head Flat Blade Screw Drivers, Find The Opening On Sanp Ring And Use One Driver To Open The Ring And The Other To Pry Away From The Recess. Do You Have The Lock Plate Tool That Depresses The Lock Plate? If Not The Spring Pressure Under The Plate Will Destroy The Snap Ring Trying To Remove. And Youll Never Reinstall Without It. Re: Lock Plate retaining ring 72,73 etc
I agree with Ed, I have taken mine out several times, for the lock cylinder and most recently, like you, to replace the key buzzer switch. Mine was damaged years ago with an attemped theft that slide hammerd my ign lock.
If you take your time, hold down on the plate to take the pressure off of the ring you can pry it out , (as per ED), and replace it with ease. Good luck.

Re: Lock Plate retaining ring 72,73 etc
The GM part number for the retaining ring is 5694191. It is available through GM dealers and most automotive stores at an obscene price.
You should be able to remove it without distorting its circular shape. Then you can reuse it.
