    Re: C1 transmission yoke markings?

Yea Rich. I kinda gathered that from John Hinkley's post. My 57 aparently has been changed sometime in its previous life.
My car has a 1962 T10 4-speed. I think from a passenger car. Would that be reason for the shorter yoke? Are 4-speeds longer?
I am debating whether to try and change it out, or leave it as be. The post about repros being a Chinese casting botters me. Can't stand Chinese DNA to begin with, and a casting sounds like it would be inviting trouble - up against a FI 327 SB. -Dan-

The Longer yoke is used with the Muncie transmission. The Muncie transmission also requires an adaptor for the rear mount to the cross member, as the rear mount is in a different position than the T10. I believe that the muncie was first used in 1962.

        Roger -

ALL '56-'62's, regardless of factory transmission type (Saginaw 3-speed, T-10 4-speed, or Powerglide) used the Corvette-unique "long" slip yoke, and all used the same length driveshaft. The Muncie wasn't used until it replaced the T-10 midway through 1963 model production.

The shorter yoke will work fine for street use until you find an original. I believe the purpose of the longer yoke has to do with spirited driving. When the rear axle drops down to the point that the rebound straps stop it the shorter yoke would/might pull out of the tailshaft housing. The extra long yoke prevents this. I may be wrong about it's purpose but I remember reading that a while ago. Rich

Thank You John Hinckley and Richard Thomas. These posts answer all my questions. I don't think the yoke could completely come out of the trans, but it probably could come out of the grease seal. At any rate I don't see me excersing the rebound straps. So for now I am going to leave it as is, and casually look for a correct one.
            Thanks Again -Dan-

                Re: C1 transmission yoke markings?

I stand corrected on the year the Muncie was first used. I think where I got confused is in 62 the rear mount bracket was changed to part number 3813335 . I think this is the same bracket that fits a Muncie if it were used for a C1 application. My 59 came with a Muncie transmision. It had a home made adaptor for the rear mount. I called a transmision place to see if there was a commercial bracket to adapt the Muncie. they sent me a bracket that resembles the 3813335. I have not had a chance to try it yet. They also sent me a new yoke as they said that a longer yoke is required. I suspect that is probably the same length that I already have.

The one I removed from my 59 was marked Spicer.
