    70 carburator

Does anyone know if the orange R seen on the drivers side of my carb is an original marking? I 've never seen it mentioned anywhere. These pics were taken before I freshened up my carb. (I preserved it.) The car is a very original car, and previously unrestored car with most unique 70 BB parts intact. The carb did not appear to ever have been rebuilt.

Yes it is, but I have seen it only on 1970 Rochester on 454 CID engines.
Nice to see the dashpot in the last photo -- another 1970 Rochester item.

Thanks Terry. I have only seen this on my car. I'm surprised it isn't mentioned in the judging guide. Eventually I will have my carb restored. I guess I'll work on reproducing the "R" with a custom rubber stamp before I send it out. Just goes to show why we should take plenty of pics BEFORE restoration.

If anyone else has a pic of their 70 454 carb, please post.

        You mean like this?

BTW: I thought it was mentioned in the TIM&JG. Are you sure it is not there?

          Re: 70 carburator

When is was at the carburator shop they explained to me that the "R" was for Rochester, so on the assembly line they did not pick the wrong carburator and also the color of the "R". Is that true? When judging the carburator it says in the NCRS manual for the carburator gasket it should be 1/16" the carburator shop recommended a approx. 1/4" gasket. Will that be a point deduction or is it OK to use?

Since there would have been three bins of Rochester carburetors in 1970 at the assembly plant -- one for base, one for the L46, and one for the LS5 -- there had to be some easy way for line workers to distinguish between them. They didn't look close enough to see the numbers and dates like we do. That red R certainly would work for that purpose, although I have never seen any evidence to support that contention. Having said that, begs the question how they distinguished between the base and L46 carburetors?

There are a lot of gaskets on carburetors -- can you be more specific as to which one you are asking about? Are you referring to the carburetor to intake gasket?

Gasket between the manifold and the carburator.

                Jordan,

Attached is a photo of my unrestored '70 LS5 carb. As you can see, it also has the marking. My car is VIN 531, a very early car. The Julian date on the carb is October 5th, 1969.

What is your car's VIN and the date on the carb?

                    Jordan,
If you ever go ahead with that rubber stamp, please let me know. I might like to work out a deal with you to use it. Just once.
                    Marc
