Don -- pulled my cap (chipped the paint on the screws with force of Phillips tip ; another on my list of touch-ups). Already learned that my color break line (yelllow-black) should be in middle of curve, and not biased to the inside, as was done on this 1984 paint job.

As for the screws; the '65 TIM&JG says they "are chrome plated and have a very thin head design; typically painted body color. Known original cars (which mine is NOT) have been observed with the top screw painted body color and the bottom unpainted".

OK; here's my theory, based on sample size of one car . Believe the screws are normal chrome plated interior screws, countersunk head, which when installed in the cap with larger holes sinks into the hole leaving the impression that the head is thin.

    Anybody buy that ?

Wayne, what is the part number in the AIM? Sometimes #8 screws have been used with #6 heads. That may be what the JG is hinting at.?!

Alan -- screw part # in '65 AIM is 4816192. A quick check of my '65 P&A30 (Rev. July 1) shows no such number (but that's not surprising as very few of the run-of-the-mill AIM fasteners list in the parts book).

But the screws really do look like a special thin head when installed.

Looked at my 64 Coupe which I believe to have the original pinch welt screws, at least they're like others I've had, they are a short screw with flat underside of the philips head, and it has a very thin 'lip' around the head visable when looking down at the philips head. The 'lip' makes it wider than the hole and it sits on top of the moulding. Wish I could put a picture on for you guys, still working on that skill!

A search on that number showed the following from Joe Lucia, May 16, 2005

"According to GM, 1970-72 Corvettes used screw GM #4816192. I haven't been able to find out very much about this screw. It was once available in SERVICE, but it was discontinued quite a few years ago. All I've been able to find out is that it was primarily used for some door side glass application on trucks."

From a discussion on 73 exhaust bezels which are a different pn. Wish I had Gr 8.9 paper work.

Although not a good picture I think you can see the difference in head size between the two. both are screw shafts are the same, about .20" (looks like a #10 screw?) Small head = .275, large = .325 +/-
