    You're welcome here anytime. I've offered the comforts of my Lakeside Manor before too, but no one has accepted yet. We're right east of the airport (10 min) and 20 minutes from the convention center, 25 to Old Town for the winter meet. That's one incentive for my move. we got good things going on year around, i.e. Daytona, Shuttle launches, etc. As fo the hima canes - well that's the price for living in paradise. We went through 3 in 04 w/o a scratch as our place was built to latest codes. Just another excuse for a party.

    THANKS stuart but there are usually 4 of us and one guy has a time share deal there in orlando so we stay there for a week when we are down for the trade show. the women are glad to get rid of us for a week. next year we maybe can get together for some adult beverages.

      Clem;

      You're on.

      Maybe you should come over for the Crane auction. If nothing else, that should be interesting. Besides the critical machinery Duke spoke of, there may be some great memorabilla. Think I'll talk my son into making the trip, assuming it is open to the public.

          Clem;

          I gave up on grass cutting several years ago. Here in Florida it is just too hot during the summer for this old guy with a bad ticker. Our St. Augustine grass is hard to get through even with a self drive - hard on blades and drive gear. I get my entire yard manicured for $85./mo and it's worth every penny. Just have to put up with the dog going nuts every Monday while they are here.

          Have a good spring and summer up there. You folks deserve it for the winter you had.

            that is why we did not retire to Fla. as we have been there in the summer on vacation when #1 son was still in school and i can take the cold better than the Fla. heat in the summer. also one year we raced the firecracker 400 and i worked as pit crew and i never was so hot in all my life.

              Clem, us old folks can put on enough clothes to get warm, but cannot take enough off to get cool. Ugh! What a terrible sight that would be!!

                It is just like anything - you learn to adapt. Personally, I'd rather have 9 months of great weather and 3 months of tolerable weather. we learn to run our lives in accordance. During the hot/wet season, we go out and do our errands early (B4 noon), including our top down rides in our Vette. Then, we'd be darn fools if we didn't get indoors, suck on a cool one and watch tv. The other 9 months we enjoy doing whatever we want including car shows, cruise ins, etc. Can actually work on the Vettes without much sweat in the cool breeze coming in through our open garage doors - no jack stand winter mothballed cars here.

                Have a great one guys. I've already said too much - might encourage more immigrants and snow birds to pay our taxes, Ha!

                    Fla. taxes are b---h as a friend moved down there about 15 years ago and his taxes were $3500 and now they are $15,000 because he is on a lake

                      Clem;

                      Was the firecracker 400 you crewed in the day or night time. For the last number of years, as I recall, it has been at night which is tolerable and why they changed the time of the venue. I went to one a few years back that was delayed by rain and didn't start until after 10pm. Tony Stewart (still in an American car) won running away from the field. I love the night races - the sounds and sights are much more intense. I learned that appreciation back in the day of the first night drag races.

                      As for taking more clothes off to get cool, well Dick, you are supposed to then jump into the water. Believe me, no one down here cares how they look w/o clothes - even at the mall where my favorite pass time, while waiting for the wife to shop, is reading Corvette mags and watching all the white legged tourists walk by in halter tops or less.

                        still a day time race and they changed it to night time later because they could not sell any tickets for the day race

                          Clem;

                          On the tax issue (property), I have a 5 BDR/3.5 Bath on a lake front built in 2004, and with the homestead exemptions (2, 1 for seniors), I pay around $2,800./yr. Where they get you is moving in, i.e. titles and registrations on your cars, home owner and auto insurances rates, utilities (incl. residential and reclaimed water), all electric appliances incl. heat & A/C, W & D & hot water, etc., need for security services, pest control, HOA annual dues & assessments, high home maintenance incl. bi-annual exterior high pressure washing, exterior re-paint of stucco about every 4-5 years, grounds maintenance (as mentioned B4), high road tolls, etc.

                          Just a snap shot.

                            my friend is on crescent lake and has 12 acres and 1000 foot frontage on the lake and i understand that is what cost him is the lake front property. is electricity expensive down there as i have noticed when we visit friends the seem to only keep the lights on in the room you are in and they shut the other lights off as they leave the room. seems like a lot of electricity is generated by oil fired steam turbines
