Been a member of the NCRS for quite a while but this is my first post. Hopefully someone can point me in the right direction for this part.
My recently purchased 61 Corvette had the typical 'notchy' steering box. Besides quite a bit of play, there was a very noticeable rough feel at center. Got the box/column on the bench and found the main problem to be a badly galled sector roller. I will be putting new gears and bearings in it to freshen things up but one item is proving a bit difficult to find. The lash screw/bolt has a washer under the head and the recommended clearance between the bolt head and the sector shaft is supposed to be .002 but mine is a bit looser at .006. One fix suggested by the instructions in the rebuild kit, written by Joe Calcagno, mentioned using a wave/spring washer (~.018 thick) in conjunction with the existing washer and then just sanding down the convex head of the bolt to arrive at the desired .002 and I just might go that way but was hoping someone would have a source for those actual washers. I was thinking that the later boxes, from 63 through 82, also had lash screws and must have had washers as well so maybe I could 'mix and match'. Any suggestions.
Thanks,
Mike T.
