    '78 Tape Rack

According to 78-79 NCRS Tech Info Manual, vehicles equiped with a tape player will have a black plastic tape rack in the glove compartment. If the rack is removed, holes in the glove compartment walls will be visible.

My '78 LE Pace Car has the 8-track tape player (standard on pace car, I believe, and documented on build sheet) yet neither the tape rack nor the visible holes.

Anyone have any insight or experience with this variation?

    High Hugh

I'm not very up on the 78 stuff, but my 78 has no 8 track player or holes in the glove box.

I believe these are the 8 track racks you mentioned. Can't remember what year these came out of. I believe a 79.

    Part #'s are 472719 and 472720

      Hugh,

I am the original owner of a 1978, silver anniversary/red leather. It was ordered with the 8-track tape player and the glove box has the black plastic racks as shown in the photo posted by Tom Hendricks. If you remove the two racks, there will be holes in the top and bottom of the glove box.

Several years ago, I purchased an NOS glove box that is identical in every respect to the original tape box but without the holes in either the top or bottom of glove box. Would assume then that glove boxes with holes had tape racks and are for cars with the tape player and glove boxes without holes were for cars ordered without the tape player.

Radio option had to to be ordered on Pace Cars...many came with CBs, others like yours and mine the 8-track and others the basic AM FM stereo.
