    Transmission Tunnel Insulator-70 L46 4spd

Has anyone had any luck installing the foil insulation and foam collar without pulling the engine and/or transmission?

    Thanks,

    Bill

Foam collar isn't that hard to install with engine/tranny in the car. It'll compress as you wiggle/slide it into position... Having free access with the car on a lift and working from below helps a bunch.

The tranny tunnel insulation pad is another matter. It's rather 'brittle' and prone to rip/tear when you try to slide it over/around the tranny. Plus, the hold down clips are SHARP and want to cut the pad + your hands as you work. But, it CAN be done...

Personally, the easiest way to gain access is by dropping the tranny to do the job nice and cleanly... Plus, you can clean the undercarriage surface and lay down adhesive to hold these insulating components snugly to the bottom side fiberglass for a clean/permanent installation. But, it's your call...

Bill - I did it on my '69 with the tranny in and it was a real PITA. Certainly was designed to be put in with tranny out. I used the sticky silver tape to repair the areas I damaged. As Jack said watch out for those clips. Paragon sells repops if you need them.

Did mine with the engine and trans out and still managed to tear the tunnel insulator. The tabs are waaaaay sharp!

          Okay.

How much of a PITA is it to pull the muncie with the motor in? I read the service manual but I really prefer to here from guys that have actually pulled the transmission and successfully reinstalled same. I had a GTO with a muncie that was actually quite simple.

Also, did you really notice a difference in the temperature of the interior when installed?

I already have it up on jack stands so I can easily get underneath.

          Thanks,

          Bill

Bill take advantage of the removing the transmission, when you remove the shifter, take it apart and clean it and relube it. You will like the new shifting experience.

Support the motor with a good size piece of wood, 2X10 is good, under the oil pan. Remove shifter and rods. Remove driveshaft, regrease u-joints if they look good. If I remember correctly, unbolt transmission and rotate to remove. It you think it is to heavy for you to handle, get assistance.
What about the throw out, bearing? When was it last replaced?
Lubricate the clutch fork pivot ball positon.
Does your rubber dust protection on the bell housing and clutch fork need replacing?
Might as well take the clutch arm off and clean it and lubricate it.
Since the speedometer cable is off the transmission, does it need lubrication? Has to be pulled out from the connection to the speedometer.
I would mention draining the transmission fluid since the transmission is being removed, but your transmission has a drain plug.

Jim has it right. All that stuff comes off -- then pull back and rotate. I believe these are the exact words in the FSM as well -- except for the word "stuff".
IT was not too hard at all -- but I cheated and had a lift and students for slaves. Wrangling the students was the hardest part.

You might even find some interesting markings -- like the transmission broadcast code ink-stamped on the trans, or yellow crayon marks at the transmission to bell housing bolts.

That is a lot to think about.

I think it may have to wait until next winter.

I am determined to get it back together and driveable in the next couple of months.

If I pull the trans the OBTWs will almost ensure no cruising with the top down this year knowing me

                Thanks guys!

Bill- I changed all of the insulating material at the same time, plus I insulated the interior. It makes a big difference. Very little heat coming in and I have a BB.
