Re: Information On 1972 Corvette Seat Belts
Bill, the seat belt interlock, I believe, was a mid-year engineerinng change for 1972. Early '72 cars like yours and mine had only the self-extinguishing light. After approx 15 seconds, the light goes out on its own. Previous years required the operator to manually push a buttom under the light to make it go out.
I am not near my AIM, but think the '72 eng change was very late in 1971, and required a buzzer to sound when the belt was not fastened. The AIM shows how the year ended, not how our cars are designed and built. Someone told me that this change was a federal safety requirement, beginning January 1, 1972. I think the passenger side had a weight sensor to "tell" the system if there was an occupant in the seat or not.
Take good care of the thermal relay that powers and extinguishes your "FASTEN SEAT BELT" light. Mine went bad and I had a heck of a time getting it going again. This relay is located on the inner bulkhead, behind the right (map pocket) panel.Don Lowe
