Getting old is a terrible thing. I can't remember if this is a midyear speaker or solid axle. I know that stamped pattern on the metal is different between the two.

agree with aging staement-----i believe the speaker to be out of a '57 Volvo dump truck and a very valuable ebay piece. St. Michael- Top

Re: Radio speaker--midyear, or solid axle?
Hello Mike,
I don't know if this is any help, but here's a recent picture taken of the speaker that is in my '65 coupe. Sorry it's not a full picture since that's not what I was focussing on.

Re: Radio speaker--midyear, or solid axle?
There is some disagreement as to whether the cone shape should be shallow on air cars, and deeper on non-C60. Some have the magnet mounted at 90 degrees to the longitudinal axis of the 6" x 9" oval (some claim that this is also a C60 feature), and these have part # 7282256 ink stamp. This is also the number shown in the Delco Radio Service Manuals 1963-7. My '65 C60 speaker is a '156', and I believe it is original (haven't removed it to judge if deep or shallow).
Maybe others can chime in.- Top

Re: Radio speaker--midyear, or solid axle?
Yes, that claim of low profile 6x9's being for C60 based cars comes up with reasonable frequency. I've seen several selling them on eBay and when pressed for GM documentation to the effect there was a different speaker used in C60 equipped cars, the silence of the response is DEAFENING...
I've not seen a call out in any mid-year AIM book which specifies a different speaker for C60 optioned cars. AND, my copies of the Delco Service Manuals for these years make no mention of a different speaker PN Corvette.
I DO know the speakers exist and those who do re-cone work are having problems finding support parts to put 'em back into working shape.
On the matching transformer being mounted sideways in the first picture, that was part of the running change 'improvement' in these speakers. The '58-60 units shown earlier in the thread are on... The xformer was mounted upright with a discrete winding wire connecting to the top.
But, the PN changed in either '61 or '62, and then again in for the '63-67 era. Plus, if memory serves, there were several different PN's used for later era service replacement speakers. BUT, all were downward compatible in terms of fit and function...- Top
