    Re: 1969 c3 rearend help

    Kenny,
This is the kind of help that can best be provided by a local chapter -- in this case the Southern California Chapter of NCRS. There will be members of that group who have first-hand experience with shops in the area. Check the CONTACTS button at the top of the page, and look them up. You will get the most help at chapter tech sessions, so join up and meet some very nice folks.

I know that process takes time, but the rewards are priceless. I belong to three chapters in very different parts of the country in order to get this kind of help.

Thank you for you reply, good advice I will look in that direction. Since my last post I have done a bit more checking (and remembering) the unit has less than 30k mileage on it and turns smooth and never made noise or leaked, however it has now been sitting for 30 years. My issue started by noticing that the axle shaft flanges had what I would consider an abnormal amount of thrust, roughly 50 to 60 thousands. Just this morning I performed a breakaway test on the unit and found that the clutches lets the axles slip with almost no effort, less than 20 lbs torque. So now I am wondering if I even really need to do a total rebuild or just replace worn clutches in the posi unit. If that is the case I am back to thinking of just doing it myself and being done with it. With fewer than 30 K of use I would doubt if the internals are in too bad a condition. What are your thoughts? Any one else out there have similar story with info that may help would be greatly appreciated. In the mean time I am going to crack the egg and have a look inside!
      Regards
      Kenny

Guldstrand used to be good, but I haven't done business with them in the last year.

Hooper's can't be beat. They have been around Forever and rear ends is all they do.
The shop doesn't look like much, but they know what they are doing.
I've have had numumerous rear ends done there from Mopars, To Vettes.

Thank you for the referal, I actually had them shorten a rear end for me way way back. It's been so long ago I didn't even think of them but your right they used to be very good. I will definetly run it over there. Thank for jogging my brain.

Kenny with the low mileage on your unit I wonder if a fresh application of lubricant and a container of posi fluid and drive to fully circulate the lubricant would make it good again?
Several years ago my 68 rear end was not driving right, I removed the old lubricant and installed new GM lubricant and posi fluid. Drove the car doing several figure 8's and it was good again. 98K on the original gears and posi now.

You may have been right about just changing fluid and a drive but well never know because I already dropped it off at Hoopers and they will R&R the posi unit and make whatever adjustments and or replacements they see necessary. After I pulled it out and opened it up it was VERY clean inside and with a nice even pattern so I was tempted to put it back, but then I let my mind wander and well "As long as I am in here" took over. I started this project many many years ago with several stops for life along the way but now I am soooo close I can hardly stand it and really want everything to be as correct and nice as I can make it. I have done a frame off and have replaced, massaged, rebuilt EVERY SINGLE PART short of this rear end so what the heck why stop now right. If I wound up with a whine, clunk or heaven forbid a drop of gear oil on the ground I would have to kick my own butt! The notion of making this car "just a nice daily driver" has long since past as has my budget so a few more dollars and days just didn't seem all that big a deal. Thank you all for your help and suggestions it is very much appreciated.
                Best Regards
                Kenny
