Newbie question coming. I purchased a '78 with very low miles (10,000) and all original equipment so I am trying to get it ready for NCRS judging. The clock only works part of the time so I think it needs a good cleaning (car was not started for over 4 years). My question is how do I get the instrument bezel off to get to the clock. I carefully removed the 4 screws that I could see but the bezel was still firmly in place. Also, how do you remove the center console cover to get to the ashtray door? The orginal owner spilled something on the cover and part of the part is missing and I would like to find a replacement cover that looks better. I spent about 40 min trying to see how to remove the console cover to get to the door. Please be gentle as I am really new to all of this and wanting to learn from all those with a lot more experience.

Re: '78 Question
Congrats on your low mileage 78! I always did like the looks of those cars, maybe it's the ground effects. It sounds like you could use an Assembly Manual (AIM) for your car so you can fix those peske little things. About the car, how original is it (paint and so on)? Sounds nice...
I have a 69 and I'm sure about your console and guage cluster configuration, so I don't want to send you bad info.

Re: '78 Question
The only thing I have found so far not original is the battery. Paint is in excellent shape except one small spot of drivers side fender. Orginal owner said she dropped a can on it and chipped the paint which she repaired with the touch up paint. I am removing the original tires and wheels and only putting them on for judging. Car has some minor leaks due to not being run for over 4 years, car is classic white with doeskin interior. Car came from factory as a radio delete but dealer installed radio for original owner before delivering it. I am trying to find the radio delete plate to restore back to 100% factory orginal.- Top

Re: '78 Question
The carpeted console sides must be removed. (3 screws on each side) The emergency brake cover must be removed (4) and the screws holding the console must be removed. There are 4 screws, one on each side of the console and 2 where the console meets the instrument cluster panel. These must be removed. The instrument panel has 4 screws, 2 in the top, one on each side of the console light and one on each side of the vertical sides of the cluster. The radio knobs and the cluster retaining nuts must be removed and the radio brace must removed from the radio. The radio can be slid back. There is a plug that plugs into the back of the instrument cluster that must be disconnected also. The center console lamp connection must also be unplugged.
To remove the center console the cigarette lighter connection, the blower motor switch, all connections electrical, vacuum and cable must be disconnected. Then there is the dreaded autotrans selector indicator that must be disconnected. If it is a 4spd. trans this last step can be omitted. The 4 transmission boot screws can be removed and then the console can be slid back and lifted off.
I highly suggest an Assemby Instruction Manual and a 1978 Chevrolet Service Manual.
This is not difficult but will take time and patience to accomplish.
Good luck.
