I believe David Crane had the most exact reproductions made.

Vette Products of Michigan (Noel Porter) makes the air cleaners for C1 and C2 Corvettes.

Bill, Do you have contact information for David Crane? I didn't see his name in the members list.

I'm at the point of either trying to restore an original or trying to talk to a manufacturer to see if they would be willing to make a better repro. I have one from CC currently on the car and it takes a hit at each judging event. I have 3 originals of the sealed 2x4 '58 units that are in pretty rough shape. I have one apart and the top aluminum is about as thick as a cheap tin pie pan. On all of them the holes for the studs appear to have worn quite a bit. Is there anyone out there that restores originals?

Thanks guys, I sent them an email to see if they're interested in making a more accurate repro. I know the spacing between the vent groups is different and the filter material is bronze colored verses silver. Any ideas on other differences? I am focused on the '58/59 sealed unit. I'm pretty sure the vent spacing difference is also true on the later unsealed units.

As I remember back through the years to my 1957 when new the aluminum was so thin and soft that you could bend it easly with your fingers. Ed

Before you deal with Crane or his company Goat Hill, search the archives.

I think that Paul Baker is Goat Hill---David Crane is Crane's Corvettes. Both in So. Cal--Baker in LA area, Crane in San Diego.

The major companies tell me the manufacturers wait for the order to hit say 1000 or more before they make them. I waited for 8 months and still never got one. I think there is a market for a perfect matching air cleaner. I'd buy one. All the car shows I go to they look like crushed coke cans straightened out. I see people turn their noses up straight away when looking in the engine compartment. I bought a second hand repo and had it chromed and straightened, it looks pretty sexy, it's just for show but it kills me knowing it's not in the ball park for authenticity. I think the hard part about making them would be trying to get the correct finish on the lid. Stewy

No Mike, the repo one I have is steel. Looks the same shape but cannot be sure because the only other 2 cars at the last U.S. day were twin carby. They actually looked a little smaller in circumference. The reason I thought it was a repo is because the base is like brand new. So I thought the lid would of been a tarnished version of the base. I will send you a mug shot of it.

The steel one is from a GTO--or one sold over the counter for years as the Corvette replacement. All original 56-62 Corvette carbureted air cleaners were aluminum rather than steel.
