      John,

Being a Watson , I don't think the separation has anything to do with how you close the hood. I think the separation will happen to any driven 67 after many years bouncing around on the road, in hot and cold weather, rain, snow or sleet, or hot sun on the hood with the engine cooking it from below.

If you were subjected to this abuse, your joints would be separated too

On a 67 small block hood, the abuse becomes apparant with longitudinal paint cracks along the joints of the central rise in the hood. Now if my car were a trailer queen and garaged all the time, it probably would not have those cracks. And doing 65 with it, I would never notice the hood bouncing up and down.

But when I got my car many years ago, it was my only car, and just a car to me then, parked outside. Got to admit, I really abused it, would take it out in the snow going skiing, I even had a trailer hitch on it at one time towing a boat.

All kidding aside (and I'm only kidding above), the reason I choose the roofing/gutter sealant for the hood joints, was that it would seemingly withstand the same abuse I've put my poor car through.

Michael, l got the stuff out here in California in Orchards Supply, I think any hardware or building supply store near you would have it also. It is not an adhesive, but a sealant for roof shingles, gutters, and flashing, but it sticks to anything.

      Just having fun

        Michael;

Jerry's right that any hardware store should have it. The last time I needed any was several years ago, but both Lowe's and Home Depot stocked this item. I think that Lowe's stocks DAP products, Home Depot usually stocks a competitor's brand if one is available.

I estimate that the thickness of the sealent under the tabs close to the centerline is about 1/4 in. Does this sound about right?

I live in Northeast Ohio and have not been able to find the Dap sealant that has been recommended in this thread....Looked all over last fall. Tried Lowes, Home Depot, Ace, Tractor Supply, and a couple independant hardware stores. I did locate what I believe is a similar Dap product...very similar package/label but not exact. I haven't used it yet on my hood. Pics attached.

              Dave,

I don't know about that asphalt stuff in your post, but here's a line to the stuff I used:

As a road engineer for many years, I know that asphalt based products get hard and brittle after may years, and soft in heat when they are young.

The polyurethane stuff I used, just gets like hard rubber and still resilient, sticks on glass. When I picked this stuff in the hardware store, I think I had read almost every tube of black stuff in the store. The guys in the store must have thought I was crazy.

What sold me was the 50 year guarantee for roof and gutters. I figured if it would last on a roof or gutter for that long, it would sure last on a 67 hood.

Randy, I think the 1/4" is about right. Take a picture of a good joint and try to replicate it on the second application.

                Dave:

You've got the old style roof cement, which used to contain asbestos many years ago, but does not anymore. It is a straight asphalt based sealer. What Jerry has is the polyurathane modified version of what you have. The polyurathane does not get brittle for a long time.

It is not unusual for retailers in certain areas not to stock particular items. Many times this is because of local or regional air qulaity regulations, although sometimes it is just a matter of what sells in a certain area, or even a distribution issue. You've tried all of the retailers that would normally carry it. This leads me to believe that there is a regulatory reason why it is not available. Although it seems highly unlikely that the Ohio DEQ would have any rules stricter than Jerry's California ARB.

You could e-mail DAP and ask them.

                Paul

P.S. There's a slight chance that Wal Mart or K Mart might carry it.
