    '63 transmission slip joke

Should a '63 with a Muncie setup for a L84 have a transmission slip joke with U joins or should it have an enclosed slip yoke?

    regards,
    Rob.

It used the style yoke with u-bolts as you have shown. It's basically, the same as all 65-67 and 68-70 with manual transmission EXCEPT the spline count is different.

Rob, To add to what Joe said I believe the yoke is like that so the driveshaft can be removed. Loosen the U bolts and slide the yoke into the tailshaft of the transmission then lower driveshaft.

          Rob,

You need this style else you will not be able to get the drive shaft down. When someone (Bubba) did my car in the 1980's they used the yoke without the U bolts (you can do this with the body off, from the top). I had to cut the piece out with a Dremel tool with a cutting wheel to get the shaft out. If you can, get the new yoke and your exiting drive shaft balanced as an assembly, before you re-install..

          Good luck,

          Joel

mmm, that explains why some pieces of glass were removed from the rear of my car near the diff. Somebody before probably encountered this problem before.

PS how does someone balances the drive shaft (incl. yokes)?

            regards,
            Rob.

There are lots of folks out there that think that the type of yoke you have on your car is the correct type for Corvettes. That's because this type is common on other Chevrolets as well as 55-62 Corvettes, so they think all Corvettes "are the same". Every one of those folks is wrong when it comes to 63-82 Corvettes, though.

Driveshaft specialty shops have the equipment to balance the driveshafts as complete assemblies, including u-joints and yoke. This is a very common sort of operation for them. I would think there would be such shops in Europe since automotive driveshafts are not something that are peculiar to the USA.

                Rob;

Dittos to Joe's last set of comments.

When I did my car and replaced the yoke, it would shake like crazy at highway speed. I found a local guy with one of those driveshaft balancing tools (the guy also built driveshafts which may be a hint where to look). He said that he had never seen one so out of spec! Now that it has been balanced, I have no shake!

Also the yoke (with U clamps) will connect to the driveshaft in two positions; 180 degrees rotation apart. It is important that you always assemble it in the same relative position. Mine now has a small yellow dot on the shaft and the yoke to ensure proper alignment.

                Goor luck,

                Joel

Rob, Make sure if you find one that the outside surface where the yoke rides on the tailshaft bushing is not wore. I am not sure but check Paragon for this part.

If your transmission is apart have a shop install a new tail shaft bushing.

Yep, Paragon sells these... I checked before I cut my old one apart!
