C2 hard top advice, strip or not?

i am sending my top off to be painted. it was repainted once, red over original white. the word white on the inside confirms it. the red does not seem clear coated. i found the original white laquer under the gasket and now know what factory luster was. lookes alot like the white gel coat on a boat. should i strip it or leave it to the shop to decide?

Ask your body guy. I chemically stripped the body on my 66 (PIA)and then met a media blaster at the Charlotte auto fair several years a go and he said he could strip my top in a few minutes for a very reasonable price, so I let him do it. Results were the same after paint. I think it's all about your time and labor cost.

my concern was exposing issues under the paint and the possibilty of contaminating the bare fiberglass. are there any issues with sanding down the current finishes and repaint? it would seem to me that if the current surface has no checking, blistering or other issues it would provide a good base for new paint. i have the shell completly dismanteled I.E. trim, window and gaskets. but i am not a body man.

        Bill,
If it were me I would chemical strip it to the red oxide primer and then wet sand the primer off. But painters are touchy guys - you should get his input. As long as you don't contaminate the bare fiberglass with some type of oil it will be fine. Use a fiberglass safe stripper and follow the instructions on clean up
