checked out my 68's gas tank what I could tonight, this sounds original or no?

Don't THINK it's original looks too good to be IMO.

I didn't remove the tire carrier so all the writing I would see was "Ternes"

and maybe "Ivan Work" or "Ivin Works"

also could see united states but most of that was cut off from my view..

    doesn't seem original huh?

Brandon, it should have an embossed circle with "O.L Anderson" in it and a stenciled part# on one side. Perhaps someone wrote on it?

Not the carrier, just the plastic piece that hides the tank, 4 bolts.

Might be the original - the tank was made from terne-plated steel (reproductions are usually made from galvanized), and the "...Works" typically identifies the mill that produced the strip stock the tank halves were stamped from. Tell us what else you find (with photos) when you get better visual access.

Ok cool! I kinda lost intrest as I thought it didn't sound original but it you think theres still a chance from what I've seen so far I might just take the tire carrier off tomorrow and have a good look!

Reason I haven't taken it off yet is it looks like it would be a pain to remove the bolts that go through the frame...be hard to get something in there on that nut to take that end loose.

I pulled down on the rubber neck at the filler and shined a flashlight around I couldn't see a tank sticker but if I get that carrier off I should be able to run my hand up there and feel around some.

Yeah thats probably it I couldn't see it that good the lighting in the basement where we keep it isn't good so I just had a flashlight shining around.

Well I went back down stairs planning to take hte tire carrier off but that would only let me see the bottom of the tank and not help with getting my hands to the top of the tank to feel for the sticker...

so I went to the filler neck pulled down the most I ever have on the rubber neck and took the chrome trim ring off and I could get me hand through! and shine the light through pretty good..didn't see or feel a tank sticker though.

pretty sure now it's the original tank atleast my dad seems to think it is.

                  Brandon,

I just pulled my tank about a month ago looking for the tank sticker, without luck. I'm not really mechanically inclined, but it wasn't very difficult. The bolts through the frame that you're talking about attach to nuts that were originally welded to the frame, so all you have to do is back the bolts out. It took me about 2 hours to remove the tank and another 2 to put the new one in. Hope this helps and good luck finding your tank sticker.
