Re: Oil pump bolt torque
If Mike is talking about his '55, then it uses the long bolt. Using the short bolt where a long bolt is specified can cause insufficient clamping forces and the bolt can back out.
Not sure when the main cap was changed, but those with the depression around the bolt must use the short bolt. Using the long bolt in instances which specify the short one will lead to the situation which you mention.- Top

Re: Oil pump bolt torque
If one needs one, these bolts might be hard-to-find these days. The GM bolts, both the 55-62 as well as the 63+ are GM-discontinued. I don't know of an aftermarket replacement for them but there may be one.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

The 55-62 bolt was 2-3/16" long. the 63+ bolt was 2" long.
Many of the oil pump studs have only a limited length of the 7/16-14 threads. They will not thread in far enough to contact the bearing shell. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
