use the special length oil pump bolt so it does not hit the back side of the bearing insert. had a guy call one time to find out why his engine would not turn over after installing the oil pump

        Clem,

If Mike is talking about his '55, then it uses the long bolt. Using the short bolt where a long bolt is specified can cause insufficient clamping forces and the bolt can back out.

Not sure when the main cap was changed, but those with the depression around the bolt must use the short bolt. Using the long bolt in instances which specify the short one will lead to the situation which you mention.

If one needs one, these bolts might be hard-to-find these days. The GM bolts, both the 55-62 as well as the 63+ are GM-discontinued. I don't know of an aftermarket replacement for them but there may be one.

same thing if you use stud for the oil pump don't let it make contact with the back of the bearing insert. i never used anything but the GM bolt and i don't remember the length but it was a odd length.

The 55-62 bolt was 2-3/16" long. the 63+ bolt was 2" long.

Many of the oil pump studs have only a limited length of the 7/16-14 threads. They will not thread in far enough to contact the bearing shell.

the studs i ran into that could be threaded in too far were the moroso set up that used a extruded aluminum extension to lower the pump into the deep sump pans so the pump pick up tube did not have to be lengthened. http://www.eautoworks.com/product-Mo...nce-240814.htm

I'll be using the original bolt and 65 ft lbs it is! Thanks!
