    1971 Window Handle/Crank Correct Number?

My 71 has two different window handles/cranks. After emailing several NCRS members with 71's they confirm that the correct number is #9715291--which is the number on the "original handle." I have someone offering me a original GM but the number on the back is #20348200 and says this is the correct window handle for a 1971 and my number does not come up as a good GM number for the handle. Can someone please hgelp me here with these numbers????????
    Thanks Paul

The numbers on the back of the handle are casting numbers. It is unlikely they relate in any way to the part number for the handle. The part number in the AIM may be correct, but it could also be for an assembly with the clip that holds the handle on. Hang in here and Joe Lucia will give you the correct part number. He da man for that stuff.

You were lucky the number turned out not to be good -- it could have been a medium duty truck frame. Now what would you do with that?

The original handle assembly, PRODUCTION and SERVICE, was GM #7752485. I believe this handle assembly carried the casting number 9715291 on the cast component. I have several NOS GM #7752485 [not for sale] but I'm just not energetic enough right now to go out and check them for casting number.

GM #20348200 is the GM PART number for the current GM SERVICE handle assembly. It's still available from GM for about 40 bucks, GM list. I don't recall what the casting number is on this piece but it's NOT the same as the original handle assemblies.

There are some slight configurational differences between the original handle assemblies and the current GM replacements. The average person would probably never notice them, but judges probably will. On the plus side, the replacements have a VASTLY superior articulation for the knob and, consequently, operate much more smoothly and last a lot longer.

The thing that most often occurs with these handles is that the knob breaks off (due to the chintzy original design). Want to maintain as much originality as possible? Use the original cast section of the arm and replace the knob with a replacement found in the carded HELP! section of your local auto parts store. That way, you maintain the original casting with its unique configuration and simply install a new knob which is close, but not exactly the same, as original. These replacement knobs are designed for folks on REAL LOW budgets so don't expect smooth operation or a long parts life, but it will be as correct as possible. You can't re-use an original knob if it breaks off.

You can also find these handles in LOTS of late 60's and early 70's Chevrolets. Just find one with the above-referenced casting number and black knob and you've found what you want. Chances are the knob will be close to falling off, though.

Having trouble find this part. Anyone out there know where I might find a 1971 window handle/crank. Any help is appreciated. Don't want a reproduction.
