Is there a way to bench check a 1975 A/C Compressor? I am inclined to have it rebuilt just to be sure but that may be spending a lot of cash for nothing. Any suggestion on who rebuilds compressors?

Re: A/C Compressor Rebuild Service?
This used to be a common, local service item -- rebuilding an A/C compressor but it's DARN HARD to find any local good ole boys these days! They were essentially driven out of business by the reverse assembly line independent remanufacturers.
Heck, you can't even buy the discrete compressor overhaul parts for what you can pay for a fully rebuilt compressor with 12-month warranty today!
The most common cause of 'death' was the failure of the front bearing/seal. If you can spin the input shaft with the clutch disengaged AND engaged, that's a good sign the internals of the compressor are in decent shape and she stopped working because the front seal blew and the system lost refrigerant.
Total BURN UP failures were rather rare after 1971 when Delco Remy equipped these compressors with a 'super heat' switch to automatically disengage the drive clutch when the system lost refrigerant and its embedded oil...- Top
