    65 tail lights?

I'm looking at a 65 vert which the back-up lights look to be the 2 inner tail lights.

However, I've seen other 65's will all red tail lights then some like this car with the 2 inners looking like back-up lights...

whats correct af far as a 65 goes?

    thanks

Backup lights were optional on the 65. If the option was taken, the two inner taillights function as backup lights with only the outer lights working as turn signals and stop lights.

To me it is a safety miss - match. It is nice to have the options (back up lights and day / night mirror) but the double taillights show up better when driven. Don H.

Just remember, a '65 day-night mirror means the car sould have backup lights. Plain mirror equals four red tailights B-U lights became standard on '66 models.

Inside mirror w/o backup lamps has a chrome plated back, the one with backups has a lever at the bottom to switch the mirror from day to nite (thus the day-night mirror option) and a stainless back.

Clup's advice is 100% correct as far as the factory concours viewpoint. In '65, the Z01 option (comfort and convenience) provided the car with backup lights and day/nite mirror.

BUT, the day/nite mirror had been a dealer add-on since 1964 and it wouldn't be the first time we saw an 'untouched' 1965 with day/nite mirror installed that prior owners swore was original because it was dealer installed...

Jack has a good point with respect to dealer installation, but the best way to confirm the cars original equipment is to check the rear wiring harness (If original) the "all red" configuration uses connections to the rear lamp sockets with two contacts per unit. On the back-up lamp equipped setup, the center two harness connectors will have a single contact for the backup lamps.

Comfort and conveince" option, got you the day-nite mirror and backup lamps as a package. In '65 neither one was available separately.

Ok, reason I ask if one 65 I have been looking at on the net I like mentions a z01 package..

I figured the guy didn't know what he was talking about and thought it was a z06 back in the day or something

would this z01 package add much value to a car?

Not really, factory new it was roughly a $16 adder and +65% of the cars built had it. You're looking at the cost of a D/N mirror and a new rear wiring harness + tranny reverse shift detection switch.

The point here was from a factory concours (judging) viewpoint, correct/original cars came with neither or both items...not one or the other...
