I haven't seen any mention of the bolt configuration.
Are the ends of you bolts tapered? They should be.
This will also help with your installation.

Mike, Yes The Bolts Are Tappered, Grade 8, Coarse Threads,self Locking Nuts, I Didnt Notice The Headmarkings. But I Beleive To Be Original To Car. Do You Happen To Know The Plating On The Bolts, Washers And Nuts . Thanks Ed

Looked at my 1970 small block tonight finally. Drivers side goes in from the front -- I have no power steering. Passenger side goes in from the rear.

I can't imagine the passenger side could be any different unless that bolt went in before the fuel pump -- and I am sure it didn't.

The driver's side on mine looks like it could have gone in either way.
